Low testosterone (low T) is a problem for around 4 to 5 million men in the United States. This important hormone is produced by the body, but production dips as you get older. Experts believe that the drop in testosterone occurs after the age of 30, but younger men can also suffer from low testosterone. Low Testosterone in Older Men

Medics believe that around 19 to 39 percent of older men have low testosterone levels. Testosterone can decrease substantially after the age of 30, dropping off steadily for every year after this age.

Low Testosterone in Younger Men

However, low T is not just a problem for older men. Teens and young men may also suffer from low levels of this important hormone. Many problems with low testosterone occur during puberty when the body should be manufacturing high levels of testosterone, but sometimes doesn’t.

Causes of Low T in Young Men

Low levels of testosterone in young men is often termed primary hypogonadism. This condition may be caused by a number of different factors, including underactive testes. Underactive testes means the testes do not produce enough testosterone for optimum growth and the condition can be inherited, or caused by injury or infection.

Causes of Low T in Older Men

In older men, secondary hypogonadism is often the major cause of low testosterone. Secondary hypogonadism occurs when the pituitary gland or hypothalamus is damaged.  Normal aging can cause this problem as aging affects the body’s production and response to certain hormones. Obesity can affect the production of testosterone, and certain medications can also have an effect. Certain syndromes and diseases also cause low testosterone as you get older. You can suffer from primary, secondary, or mixed hypogonadism – mixed hypogonadism is the most usual cause associated with increased age.

What You Can Do

If you have low testosterone levels there are certain things you can do to reverse the problem, no matter what age you are. For example, medication and therapies exist to raise testosterone levels. You can also make lifestyle changes that affect hormone production and testosterone in particular.
