According to a 2008 study published by the Endocrine Society, men with low testosterone levels had a 2.5 times higher risk of dying within the next decade, compared with men who had normal levels of the hormone. The risk was associated with the greater chances of men with low testosterone also suffering from heart disease and some forms of cancer. The scientists also reported that using testosterone replacement therapy reduced the risk of these men developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Low Testosterone in Later Life

Science shows that a man’s testosterone levels start dropping as he gets older – at around the rate of 1 percent each year after the age of 30, according to the Mayo Clinic. The American Diabetes Association says over 13 million men in the US have low testosterone levels.

You can help prevent this decline as you get older – you do not automatically have to suffer low levels of testosterone. Keep your testosterone levels high by making some simple lifestyle changes that help you as you age. Maintaining a healthy weight, getting plenty of exercise (including weight training or resistance training), eating a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep are all important factors for increasing your testosterone levels and keeping healthy.
